Mental Health in America
With so many events happening in the United States, the American population is experiencing a mental health crisis. Every year, mental health conditions go untreated and affect the lives of millions of Americans. How do you tell if someone might be suffering from a state of mental health problems? What can we do to help? Today, I will be answering those questions and more.
Mental Illness in the US
One in five adults in the U.S. — 43.8 million, or 18.5% — experiences mental illness in a given year. Mental illness is described as A wide range of conditions that affect mood, thinking, and behavior. Some of the most common types of mental illness involve clinical depression, anxiety disorder, bipolar disorder, dementia and many more. Without treatment, mental health issues can affect someone’s education, employment, physical health, and much more. If not talked about or treated, someone can become a serious danger to themselves if they’re struggling with anger, confusion, depression, and the feeling of not being loved. Another statistic shows, one in five children suffers from a mental health or learning disorder, and 80% of chronic mental disorders begin in childhood. As a result, the problem is rising in the United States and we need to fix it.
Where Are the Problems Coming from?
There are many problems that need to be addressed. For instance, there is a low number of facilities that treat serious mental illnesses is low. We need more funds to handle mental health problems before they get any worse. Providing beds for someone mentally ill helps give them a chance to stay in a controlled environment patiently waiting to see a doctor. If we don’t provide this type of service, who knows when they would actually be able to get an appointment. As people have said in the past, we have sent a lot of people to prison when in fact they probably needed more help. This caused them to enter into a system which actually does them more harm than good.
Local Level Support
Although we will be working on a large scale to combat mental illness, that doesn’t mean we can’t help in our local communities. Show support, and if you know someone who is suffering from mental illness, tell them they are not alone. Listen to them and ask what you can do to help. If treatment is needed, look for available resources in your city. Support the healthy habits that will help manage your friend’s mental health and don’t give up!
