Without adequate levels of melatonin, your sleep schedule can become scattered, likely resulting in poor sleep patterns that may be difficult to escape. Magnesium helps calm the nervous system down so it can work more efficiently, while contracting muscles, producing energy and protein, and helping you de-stress for a full night of rest.

Adequate Levels of Magnesium

The recommended daily intake of magnesium is 310-360mg for women and 400-420mg for men. Magnesium is one of the most common minerals on earth and is present in many foods, like green vegetables, nuts, cereals, meat, and fatty fish. Consuming magnesium-rich foods is shown to have a greater impact on your body than consuming supplements, however, you will need to consume large amounts of mineral-rich foods to reach the recommended daily intake. A study showed that adults with insomnia who took a 250mg daily dose of magnesium were shown to have improved sleep patterns within days of starting a regimen. This not only improved their ability to sleep but also their quality of sleep.
