Time to Prepare for Hurricane Season

This past week has seen the start of hurricane season. With storms making their way towards the States, the need for preparation is more important than ever.

You cannot stop a natural event from occurring, but you can make sure that you and your family are prepared for it. There are a few things that should be done in anticipation of the upcoming hurricane season.

Study Your Evacuation Route

Every evacuation route is going to vary based on your location. Certain areas are labeled surge zones and they determine how prone that area is to flooding during a hurricane or storm. Surge zone maps are used to determine evacuation routes. Understanding which surge zone you are located in will give you the evacuation route you need.

Gather Supplies

The Red Cross created a list of supplies that everyone should have when faced with the possibility of a hurricane. The list includes:

  • Water: 3-day supply (one gallon per person per day)
  • Food: 3-day supply of non-perishable, easy-to-make food
  • Flashlight
  • Battery-powered radio
  • First aid kit
  • Medications: at least 7 days’ worth, and medical items (hearing aids with extra batteries, glasses, contact lenses, syringes, cane)
  • Sanitation and personal hygiene items
  • Family and emergency contact information

Make an Emergency Plan

When disaster strikes, you may not always be near your family. So, it is important to have a plan that you and your family will follow in the case of an emergency. The plan can be crafted by gathering your family and answering questions about ways to keep in contact, nearby shelters, and evacuation routes.

Remember Your Pets

Your furry friends need the same amount of preparation that you or your family require. They should have their own kit of supplies and be included in the emergency plans. If you believe a shelter could become a possibility for your family, you will want to do some research. Some shelters do not accept animals, so other arrangements would need to be made for your pet.

There is nothing you can do to stop a natural event from occurring. All you can control is how you react and prepare to protect yourself and your family.
