When restaurants and bars were forced to close due to all non-essential businesses having to cease in-person operations, state governors made it easier to purchase alcohol. In Texas, for example, restaurants could sell to-go beer and liquor, provided that the drinks were sealed. This was implemented as a way to help restaurants and stay afloat during the pandemic and increase sales. However, it is also contributing to the increase in alcohol consumption. According to Statista, online alcohol sales in the week of March 21 went up 243%.

Alcohol is known to be a substance that can lead to an increase in mental health issues due to the disruption of neurotransmitters in the brain. With the mental issues that have been caused by the COVID-19 pandemic coupled with the ease of access to more alcohol, it has made for a dangerous combination. Although consumption of alcohol temporarily gives a stress-relief feeling in the body and brain, according to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism, the feeling will not only return but worsen once the effects of alcohol wear off.

The social impact of the pandemic is impacting alcohol use, too. While meetings can be held virtual, there is no replacement for having a social support group and being able to see them in person. The feeling of loneliness can set in during a situation like this where it is not safe to go out and be around a large group of people, and that can contribute to alcoholism as well.

In addition to the social impact, a false belief circulated on the internet that consuming alcohol could help destroy the COVID-19 virus. This is simply is not true. Medical News Today states that high-proof alcohol can kill some forms of viruses and bacteria, but only on the skin. In no way does consuming alcohol lessen one’s chances of contracting COVID-19. In fact, it may impair immune function.
