What Is Addiction and Who Does It Affect?

According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health(NSDUH), 21.5 million American adults (12 and older) battled a substance abuse disorder in 2014. An addiction is considered a disease in the brain that spawns from compulsive substance abuse despite the consequence. Tips to Fight Back

If you’re ready to move away from your addictions, here are some tips to help turn away from the bad habits. Before starting, it is important to set a goal. For instance, a person might say, “I’m trying to stop smoking cigarettes.” While setting a goal is important, it’s even more imperative to have a game plan to help you achieve that goal.

Quitting cold turkey can be hard for some. If you find yourself struggling to quit abruptly, try limiting your habits to specific days during the week when you’re free. This way your habit isn’t interfering with your day-to-day life. It’s important to find something that will fill in the spot/urge when you want to turn to your addiction. Problem drinking? Do a few push-ups when you try to fix a drink. You will want to stay away from any temptation that might make you turn to your addiction, whether that is your environment and friend group. Get temptation out of your home and stay far away from anything that might trigger your craving.
