Causes of sleep deprivation

Sleep deprivation is a common problem in society today. There are numerous reasons for the long-term lack of sleep. According to the Central for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), one in three American adults does not get the recommended number of seven hours per night. The contributors to causes of sleep deprivation include working long hours, demanding jobs, family, depression, hormones, or sleep apnea. These are all valid and mostly unavoidable problems faced by society today. Making a change in life is difficult but compared to the alternative effects of sleep deprivation, a little difficulty is bearable.

Jobs cause sleep deprivation

Jobs, especially in American society, tend to control the lives of people working then. Corporations do not care about their people, for the most part. They only care about the profit margin. This means that the average employee is squeezed for the largest portion of their time for the lowest amount of dollars. Because corporations are so demanding, the American work-life balance is terrible. This causes stress and late nights. All this leads to poor sleeping habits and a lack of sleep.

Family and depression

Family plays a major role in everybody’s life. If family life is not good, the stress levels will rise and keep people up at night. Poor family situations can lead to depression (along with many other reasons). Clinically depressed people have excessive fatigue and insomnia. Depression is one of the major causes of sleep deprivation.

Sleep apnea

Because of all the stresses and rigors of work and family, an estimated 22 million Americans suffer from sleep apnea. That is nearly 10 percent of the population. These numbers increase each year which indicates a negative trend. Sleep apnea is a condition that does not let the body fall asleep for extended periods of time. Basically, when you are sleeping, your body wakes up throughout the night on multiple and regular intervals. When the mind and body cannot enter the necessary stages of the sleep cycle, they start to deteriorate.
