The Birth of a Nation

The Fourth of July is one most important holidays in the United States because it celebrates its Independence Day. Hundreds of cities across the nation are hosting festivities, food, and fireworks shows to celebrate our Fourth of July as it deserves.

Why is this holiday so important? Let’s take a brief look back and remember important details about this holiday and some ideas for making the most of it this summer.

The Stamp Act

In 1765, the Stamp Act forced the 13 colonies to pay a tax to Great Britain for the first time. This act brought discontent and fury to the Colonies. For ten years, the tension and conflicts increased until, on June 7, 1776, Richard Henry Lee declared in one of the sessions of the Pennsylvania State House that the Colonies had “the right to be free and independent.”

This declaration led to the formation of the Committee of Five, made up of well-known figures: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, Roger Sherman, and Robert Livingstone. This committee wrote up the draft of the Declaration of Independence. However, the main task fell to Thomas Jefferson. It was not until July 4, 1776, that the Declaration of Independence became effective.

The Fourth of July holiday became more critical after the War of 1812, better known as The Battle of New Orleans, where The United States triumphed over the British army. Officially, the Fourth of July as we know it today became a federal paid holiday in 1938.

On this Fourth of July, let’s remember these vital aspects of our history because they remind us of where we came from and where we are going as an American society.

Celebrating our History

Here I share some ideas for celebrating this holiday responsibly:

1. The traditional celebration in a Lake. Gather your family and friends on that lake near your town and spend a great day outdoors. Remember to use sunscreen and stay hydrated to combat the summer heat.

2. Travel to a different city with your friends or family. An original way to celebrate this Fourth of July is to leave your town and celebrate the holiday in another city or state where you have never been. Expand happy memories and get out of the comfort zone a little bit. (HINT: You’ll want to hurry; many people travel on this date)

3. Find the itinerary of activities for the Fourth of July in your city. Your town will likely have a fireworks show, musical performances, and many fun activities to celebrate this holiday. Go out and enjoy what your town has to offer. Cheer up!

4. Support a local business. Enjoy a meal at a local barbecue or burger shop you have always wanted to go to but never had the time. Now is a good moment to go for it!

5. Host your party at home and invite your friends and family. Do not let this day pass without sharing it with those you appreciate.
