U.S. Donating 25 million vaccine doses

U.S. Donating 25 million vaccine doses

With the U.S. donating 25 million vaccine doses, where will they go? The Biden administration has announced that the first 25 million doses the U.S. will donate will go to low- and middle- income countries to help combat the dangers that the COVID-19 Pandemic presents. About 75 % of the first 25 million doses (totaling approximately 19 million) will go to COVAX, a global vaccine aid program founded by the World Health Organization.

Remaining doses will be sent directly to the nations needing assistance. Six million doses will go to South and Central American countries including Brazil, El Salvador and Paraguay. Another six million doses will head to Canada, Mexico, the Middle East and Ukraine.  Seven million shots will be sent to Asian nations, India, Nepal, Pakistan and the Phillippines. 5 million doses will be sent to African nations in need. The donated doses will be a combination of Pfizer, Moderna and the Johnson & Johnson one-shot vaccines.

For over a month now, the United States has had a surplus of vaccine availability, with most vaccine centers not requiring an appointment to go up and get a COVID vaccine. As of June 3, 44.4 percent of Texans had received one dose of the vaccine, with 35.7 percent of the population fully vaccinated, which is defined as two weeks after a second dose, or two weeks after receiving the Johnson & Johnson one-shot. 51 percent of all Americans have received one dose, while 41 percent are considered to be fully vaccinated.

With the number of doses in extreme excess, the U.S. is now in a position to be able to assist other countries in their vaccination efforts, particularly those in financial peril. With 25 million extra doses and surely more to come, the country is playing its part in trying to end the COVID-19 pandemic worldwide.

Recently, the United States approved people from the age of 12 to receive a Pfizer vaccine, whereas before the minimum age was 16. President Biden stated earlier this spring that his goal was to have 70 percent of the country vaccinated by July 4, so that we could all enjoy summer as intended. Initiatives such as giving away free beers at breweries or tickets to baseball games are being offered to those who wish to receive their shots between now and July 4.
