A Special Enrollment Period, also referred to as an SEP, allows you to enroll in or change an ACA Marketplace health insurance plan outside of Open Enrollment. To qualify, you generally need to experience a qualifying life event.
What Qualifies for an SEP?
The most common qualifying events include:
- Losing health insurance coverage
- Having or adopting a child
- Getting married
- Moving
- Losing Medicaid or CHIP coverage
- Turning 26 and aging off a parent’s health plan
- Gaining citizenship or qualifying immigration status
Some qualifying events may give you the opportunity to enroll before your current coverage ends, while others apply after the event occurs. The timing and enrollment options can vary depending on your situation.
Do you Automatically Qualify?
No. Simply being uninsured does not typically qualify you for a Special Enrollment Period. Your eligibility depends on your specific circumstances and the qualifying event.
You may also need to provide documentation, such as a marriage certificate, proof of losing coverage, or evidence of your move. Providing the requested information promptly can help prevent delays in your enrollment.
It’s also important to remember that not every change in your circumstances creates an SEP. For example, voluntarily dropping health coverage generally does not qualify. If you’re unsure whether your situation counts as a qualifying event, it’s worth checking your eligibility before assuming you have to wait for Open Enrollment.
What This Means for You
If you’ve recently experienced a major life change, you may not have to wait for Open Enrollment to get ACA health insurance. Check whether your situation qualifies for a Special Enrollment Period and act quickly, since SEP enrollment windows can be limited. Understanding your eligibility as soon as a qualifying event occurs can help you avoid a gap in health coverage.
