Addiction: Ways to Fight Back Against Your Unhealthy Habit
Struggling with an addiction can be tough, whether that’s drinking, smoking, shopping, gambling, etc. It’s hard to get over addictions, especially if you have a personality for it. You’re not alone; there are plenty of methods to help get rid of that ball and chain in your life. Today, I want to go over tips/resources available for those who want to fight back against their addictions!
What Is Addiction and Who Does It Affect?
According to the National Survey on Drug Use and Health(NSDUH), 21.5 million American adults (12 and older) battled a substance abuse disorder in 2014. An addiction is considered a disease in the brain that spawns from compulsive substance abuse despite the consequences. Some of the key characteristics of addiction vary from cravings, compulsions, repetition of usage, harm, or even dependence, all stemming from the substance. When addicted to something, at times, your behavior can be changed, and not for the better. In other words, addictions can cause mood swings, short temperateness, or even an enthusiastic approach to life when not using drugs. The National Institute on Drug Abuse states that the beginning of addiction starts when people attempt to use objects to feel good, relieve stress, do better, or out of peer pressure or curiosity.
Tips to Fight Back
If you’re ready to move away from your addictions, here are some tips to help turn away from the bad habits. Before starting, it is vital to set a goal. For instance, a person might say, “I’m trying to stop smoking cigarettes.” Setting a goal is important, but it is even more imperative to have a game plan to help you achieve that goal.
Quitting cold turkey can be difficult for some. If you struggle with quitting abruptly, try limiting your habits to specific days during the week when you’re free. This way, the habit isn’t interfering with your day-to-day life. It’s critical to find something that will fill in the spot/urge when you want to turn to your addiction. Problem drinking? Do a few push-ups when you try to fix a drink. You will want to stay away from any temptation that might make you turn to your addiction, whether that is your environment or friend group. Get temptation out of your home and stay far away from anything that might trigger your craving.
