The Pros and Cons of Drinking Milk That You Should Consider
If you’re like me, you drank milk for strong bones growing up. Besides building bones, milk has many nutritional benefits of and has always been readily available no matter where you go. Do you ever get tired of the normal strawberry, chocolate, or vanilla milk? Turns out there is different plant-base alternatives that are taking the markets by storm. These alternatives have different properties and provide our body with different types of nutrition. Each of these types offers its own pros and cons. Today, we will take a dive into the alternatives and the benefits of drinking each type.
The Pros and Cons of Dairy Products
Cow milk is a good source of protein, calcium, and vitamin D, and it helps provide a robust amount of nutrition for kids. The new plant-based alternatives include non-dairy milk, such as soy, almond, rice, and coconut milk. Out of all alternatives available, soy milk is the most comparable. Soy milk is cholesterol free, no lactose, and is low in saturated fat while being a good source of protein and calcium. The problem with soy is too much of it can hurt those with thyroid disease and lower fertility rates. Almond milk is a great source of low calories with no saturated fat or cholesterol. Almond milk is not a good source of protein though, and it contains no calcium. Coconut milk is full of healthy fat, potassium, and vitamins, such as b12. This alternative needs to be consumed in moderation to avoid calories from adding up.
Why You Might Want an Alternative
The reason we are looking into different options is the fact cow milk can be bad for us. Depending on how the cows are raised, its immune system, what it eats, and much more can determine the quality of cow by-products. It is much safer to choose some of the alternatives that do not rely on coming from an animal. You should avoid dairy alternatives that use artificial flavors, sweeteners, carrageenan, or added sugar. You might be avoiding regular milk because of its risks in areas like lactose intolerance, acne, cholesterol, antibiotics, or more.
