World Health Day: Play Your Part in Universal Healthcare

World Health DayWorld Health Day: Play Your Part In Universal Healthcare

On April 7th each year, we celebrate World Health Day globally. Each year we can come together and focus on the goal of making health care universal. With half the world not receiving the essential health services they need, this day is to discuss how we can move forward to make that possible. Is this dream of worldwide healthcare possible? And what are activists doing to push this agenda forward? Today, we will cover World Health Day and how universal healthcare can be made possible.

The World Health Organization

Countries all around the world invest in the World Health Organization to help give access to essential quality care and financial protection. The World Health Organization is a specialized agency of the United Nations that is concerned with international public health. The problem is there are so many people in the world and half of them aren’t covered. To stay on goal, Universal Healthcare needs to benefit one billion more people by the year 2023. With the upcoming World Health Day, the World Health Organization hopes to get the ball rolling through a series of events and conversations held at multiple levels.

Who Works with the WHO?

The WHO works with many partners giving them many projects to work on. Some of the health-focused projects include aging and life course, cancer research, drug information, and much more. With this being the 70th anniversary of World Health Day, WHO is calling on world leaders to live up to the pledges they made when they agreed on the Sustainable Development Goals in 2015.  WHO will begin a full assault starting on April 7th and continue to push for worldwide healthcare.

How You Can Play a Part

Want to know how you can play your part? You should engage in conversations with a broad community and speak about the benefits of ensuring universal health coverage.  Find organizations that aspire to the same thing as you and discuss outreach events that can be done in your community. Reach out to local leaders and policymakers who can hear your voice and put it into action. Hold policy-makers and politicians accountable if someone has made a pledge or commitment to work with it towards that goal instead of it being all talk.
