hurricaneHurricane Florence Helpful Tips And Reminders For Storm Impact

With Hurricane Florence potentially hitting a large size of America, it is important that those being affected know precautions and risk associated with hurricanes. Many life-threatening events can emerge from a hurricane, whether that is flash flooding, potential diseases in water, dangerous animals, and much more. In precaution to these risk today we will cover what risk come with possible hurricanes and the best advice to help avoid these problems.

Waste Worries

Florence is located about 435 miles southeast of Wilmington, North Carolina. Predicted to bring about 3 feet of rain, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration released a statement that Florence has the possibility of severe flooding. Risk comes into play due to the fact that North Carolina is a major producer of poultry and hogs estimated around 9 million. The hogs waste is managed and flown into pits called lagoons, which run the risk of overflowing into crop fields and other bodies of water. These floods have the potential to create mudslides, washouts, and other weather anomalies.

Precautions

When Florence makes contact, its impact will bring historic rainfall damaging winds, storm surges, and possible tornados. You can expect power outages, so it’s important to be prepared for anything. Be sure to pack drinks and foods that can last you for as long as you need. When storing food and drinks by putting ice in your washing machine and closing it, it will keep your food cold without having to worry about a mess or electricity. Make sure your phone is full in case of emergency calls. Having portable battery chargers might be helpful if your power goes out. Remember to have at least a gallon of water per person per day.

Stayed at Home?

If you are someone who chooses to stay in their home remember to get into a secure room without windows. Stay on the bottom floor of your home unless water begins to rise (you can get stuck in your attic). If you are in an area that will flood, turn off electricity at the main breaker. Do not use portable generators which can build up your house with carbon monoxide. Avoid standing water which can be contaminated with anything from animal excrement, diseases, electric wires, and many more dangers.

We hope those affected by the storm will be safe and prepared. If you are looking to help provide aid in any way please visit https://www.charitynavigator.org/index.cfm?bay=content.view&cpid=6709.
