Avocados: Health Benefits, Recipes, and More for Your Favorite Side Dish
There’s a lot to love about avocados. Whether it’s with chips or your favorite Chipotle bowl, avocados are loved by many. But here’s the real question: is an avocado even healthy for you? Today, we will look at what experts say about eating avocados and some of the best guacamole recipes as a bonus.
Avocados host many different health benefits because avocados are a healthy fat. Avocados are monounsaturated fats, which have multiple health benefits like weight loss, heart disease, insulin sensitivity, and much more. Researchers have concluded that avocados have the most benefits in cholesterol levels on a broad scale, affecting every aspect of metabolic syndrome, which is known for being the silent killer. Avocados are abundant in nutrients, including vitamins K, E, C, B6, and B5. Plus, avocados contain 7 grams of fiber, which contributes to its effects on weight loss and holding blood sugar at bay.
Some other areas avocados can help include your digestive and eye health. Due to the amount of fiber in avocados, your digestion can be more efficient, promote the growth of healthy bacteria, and lower gas within the digestive system. Avocados are also capable of reducing the eye conditions such as cataracts. They’re rich in zeaxanthin and lutein which help with the protection of your eyes from light-induced damage.
Recipes and More
Avocados can stay fresh in the fridge for 2-3 days, giving you time to use them for multiple recipes you know and love. Many avocado recipes can be a snack, a side dish, or even the main entree. For instance, a great side dish, of course, is making guacamole. To make guac you will need:
- 2 ripe avocados
- 1/2 teaspoon Kosher salt
- 1 Tbsp of fresh lime juice or lemon juice
- 2 Tbsp to 1/4 cup of minced red onion or thinly sliced green onion
- 1-2 serrano chiles, stems and seeds removed, minced
- 2 tablespoons cilantro (leaves and tender stems), finely chopped
- A dash of freshly grated black pepper
- 1/2 ripe tomato, seeds and pulp removed, chopped
Put it all in a bowl, then stir, and you will have the perfect side dish.
You can take a smashed avocado and simply put it on toast for a great snack on the run. Add eggs, tomatoes, and your choice of sides to make an even better treat. One interesting recipe for avocados is stove-top mac n’ cheese. Mixing avocados inside of mac and cheese adding pepper jack cheese, cilantro lime, and any other spice you would want to add can give a classic dish a new twist and bring you all sorts of new tastes. One last recipe that avocado eaters will love is an avocado sorbet. All you need is frozen avocados, syrup, and a blender; then, mix in your favorite fruit and ice cream.
We hope those who love avocados find this interesting and those who don’t will give at least one recipe a try!
