If you have been around children throughout this pandemic, you can understand how hard it can be to keep them entertained at home. However, one of the easiest ways to do so is by letting them have screen time to watch their favorite show or play their favorite game. Most parents tend to be concerned with letting their children spend too much time staring at a screen. If that is you, here are a few ideas for keeping the screen time to a minimum.
Screen Time Free Activities
Create a busy box. A “busy box” is a pretty simple concept that you can pull out whenever you want to give your child a break from their devices. The box is a container that holds various activities the child can occupy themselves with. Some examples are Legos, Play-Doh, building blocks, etc.
Let them help. Children can be the greatest little helpers when given the opportunity. Giving a child a task such as gathering the ingredients for dinner or helping with yard work will keep them too busy to spend too much time on their screens.
Creative toys. Toys with bells and whistles can lose their novelty pretty quickly after being bought. That is why it is important to get your child toys that they can use over and over again without getting bored. A few examples are Legos, Play-Doh, building blocks, etc. These types of toys last forever and they encourage creativity.
Outdoor play. Another option is to keep it old-fashioned and send your child outside to play. There are a ton of activities to do outside and none of them involve a device. Let your child run free and enjoy nature but make sure to keep them in your line of vision.
Have a scavenger hunt. A scavenger hunt does not always have to be some complex list of steps. Instead, it can be something as simple as asking your child to find you an object that starts with the letter S or is the color red. This activity will have them so busy running around the house looking for the objects that they will not have a chance to get bored.
Host playdates. This final option is great when you have trusted friends and neighbors. You can send your child over to a friend’s house or have them come over. It gives your child the chance to socialize, and they can do any of the activities listed above with a friend. It’s a great way to keep your child busy without needing screen time.
