Ring In the New Year Safely
There is nothing that makes me more excited for the New Year’s Eve celebration than getting to watch a firework show. Unfortunately, when I was growing up, I remember having to go to a family member’s home, as my neighborhood did not allow the use of fireworks. As a child, this was upsetting to me, but now that I am older, I understand that it was all for the safety of the city and the people who lived there.
Fireworks are small explosives, and although they are meant for entertainment, they can cause major harm when used improperly. This New Year’s Eve, make sure you are staying safe when handling fireworks.
Handling Fireworks With Care
Fireworks are a fun tradition that many families love to enjoy on New Years Eve. While it comes with a great time, we should be practicing proper safety measures to ensure that we do not enter the New Year with injuries. Phantom Fireworks has provided a list of firework safety measures that should be implemented when you plan to use the colorful explosives. Their recommendations are as follows:
- Keep away from children. Only adults should be handling fireworks as they burn very hot.
- Do not handle fireworks while under the influence. Being impaired can increase the risk of injury.
- Follow the law. There are certain ordinances that do not allow the use of fireworks for good reason. Use only the proper fireworks permitted for your state and local jurisdiction.
- Purchase from reliable sources. These vendors will provide products that have met the standards enforced by the government. Do not try to alter or make your own fireworks.
- Use the proper technique when lighting fireworks. You always want to use fireworks on a hard, flat surface. Similarly, you want to make sure you are stabilizing the firework so that it does not tip over and explode towards the onlookers. When lighting the firework, ensure that your arm is extended as far away as possible and use an extended lighting device. After you light the fuse, back away from the firework as fast as you can!
- Have a water source nearby. There should be a fire extinguisher or water hose close in case of emergencies. You may choose someone to be a designated fireman who will be ready to watch the firework and use the water if necessary. This is especially important for areas with dried grass or brush nearby where you are setting off fireworks.
- Do not continue to use malfunctioning items. If you light a firework and it doesn’t go off, do not continue trying to work with that item. Should the firework fail to light, let it sit for five minutes and then cover it with water.
Fireworks can be fun, and I know that I am going to be enjoying lighting a few to ring in the New Year. However, having fun does not mean throwing caution to the wind. Use the safety measures listed above to ensure that your celebration isn’t cut short.
